In a landmark development for African football, Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has been appointed as the Acting Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position in CAF’s over 70-year history.

Leadership Change at CAF

Adamu succeeds Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down to contest the presidency of FECOFA (DR Congo). The appointment was officially confirmed by Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Before stepping into this pivotal role, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a central role in organizing some of Africa’s most prestigious competitions. His administrative expertise and commitment to African football were key factors in his elevation.

Appointment and Responsibilities

The CAF Executive Committee proposed Adamu’s appointment, which was ratified by the CAF Congress on March 29, 2026, in Cairo. While currently in an acting capacity, Adamu is expected to steer CAF’s administrative and strategic operations during a period of ongoing reforms and modernization in African football.

This move not only ensures continuity in CAF’s leadership but also recognizes Adamu’s long-standing contributions to the organization and the development of football across the continent.

⚽ With Adamu at the helm, Nigerian football fans have a reason to celebrate a homegrown leader rising to the top of African football administration.
