A Nigerian woman has ignited intense debate online after revealing that her husband asked her to resign from her job as a medical doctor shortly after she announced a recent promotion.

She shared her story on X (formerly Twitter), where it quickly drew hundreds of reactions and divided opinions.

“Resign or we go our separate ways”

According to her post, the tension began immediately after she broke the news of her career advancement.

“Right after I shared the news of my promotion, my husband told me to quit my job as a doctor and become a full-time housewife,” she wrote.

When she refused to abandon the career she had worked hard to build, she said he issued an ultimatum.

“Resign by month-end or we go our separate ways. Now he’s silent, sleeping in another room, all because I chose my dream.”

Her story resonated with many women who said they have experienced similar pressure in their marriages.

Social Media Users Weigh In

Reactions poured in from different perspectives.

A user identified as Hermon strongly criticized the husband’s stance, writing:
“That’s not your husband. You married an enemy, not a husband. Fight for your dreams. They are valid. Marriage is not a place for domination. Can two walk together except they agree?”

Another commenter, Lady Elena, emphasized the importance of premarital conversations:
“Best to discuss these issues before marriage. Hope he changes his mind. Congrats on your promotion.”

Abimbola suggested a more cautious and strategic approach:
“Tell him you declined the promotion but keep the job and observe his behavior. If things improve, then you both need a serious heart-to-heart talk. Competition in marriage is not healthy.”

Nelson attributed the conflict to a lack of preparation before marriage:
“Signs of marriages that start without counseling and proper agreements. People think love alone can run a marriage.”

Funmi questioned why the husband married a career-driven woman if he preferred a stay-at-home partner:
“There are women who don’t want to work. Why didn’t he marry one of them? My sister, hold your job tight.”

DCMorgan added:
“This is exactly why women should get an education and gain work experience. Then suddenly, the husband gives a crazy ultimatum.”

As the debate continues, the situation has reignited broader conversations about career ambitions, gender roles, and expectations within marriage.
