President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the recent attacks in Maiduguri, describing the incident as both heartbreaking and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the President mourned those who lost their lives, extended his sympathy to the injured, and assured residents of Borno State of the federal government’s support during this difficult period.
“The recent news from Maiduguri, Borno State, is profoundly upsetting. I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured, and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno during this challenging time,” he said.
“Terrorists acting out of desperation”
President Tinubu described the attacks as desperate attempts by criminal and terrorist groups under pressure from Nigerian security forces.
“I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final, frantic efforts of criminals and terrorist elements trying to spread fear, as they are under constant pressure from our brave armed forces and security agencies,” he stated.
He reassured Nigerians that efforts to combat insecurity would be intensified across the country.
Troops commended for bravery
The President praised the courage and resilience of Nigerian troops who reportedly repelled coordinated attacks on military positions in the state.
“I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled these coordinated assaults,” he said, expressing confidence in the ability of security forces and local civilian task groups to contain the threat.
New security measures underway
Tinubu also revealed that fresh security measures have already been approved following a recent meeting with top security and intelligence officials.
“Just last weekend, during a security meeting with leaders of our security and intelligence agencies, I approved additional equipment and operational support to enhance their capabilities. This effort is already in progress,” he added.
He further directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to oversee operations, while emergency response agencies have been tasked with providing proper care for the injured.
“Nigeria will not succumb to fear”
Reaffirming his administration’s stance, the President declared that no part of the country would be safe for terrorist groups.
“There is no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety. We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them. Nigeria will not succumb to fear,” he said.
The statement comes amid renewed concerns over security in the North-East, as authorities continue efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
