A Nigerian mother has sparked a wave of conversation online after expressing frustration over what she sees as an unhealthy trend in schools turning children’s birthdays into lavish competitions.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @chukserice, she recounted her shock when her children returned home from school with a bicycle and a bag filled with expensive gifts, all from a classmate’s birthday celebration.

For her, the issue goes beyond generosity. She believes these increasingly extravagant gestures are creating silent pressure among parents especially those who may not have the financial means to match such displays.

“School is not a competition ground,” she stressed, questioning why a simple birthday celebration should come with gifts that place expectations on other families. She made it clear that just because children attend the same school does not mean their parents share the same financial capacity.

Her message was both firm and reflective: birthdays, she argued, should remain personal and family-centered, rather than evolving into public showcases of wealth within classrooms.

She also called on parents and school authorities to rethink the growing culture, warning that it risks shifting children’s focus from celebration to comparison.

The video has since stirred mixed reactions online. While many praised her for addressing an issue others quietly struggle with, some defended the act of giving, describing it as harmless generosity.

Regardless of where people stand, her perspective has ignited a broader conversation about boundaries, social pressure, and what children truly take away from these experiences.
