Jos, Plateau State – Tragedy struck Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area yesterday evening as gunmen reportedly on motorcycles stormed the community, opening fire on residents and killing an unspecified number of youths.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as the attackers fired sporadically. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:
“The attackers just rode past and started shooting randomly. People were running in all directions. It was terrifying.”
Following the attack, angry youths reportedly blocked major roads within the community, raising fears of escalating tension in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Commissioner, Bassey Ewah, and the Police Public Relations Officer had not responded to calls seeking official confirmation and details of the incident.
This latest violence comes just weeks after a deadly ambush in Kanam Local Government Area, where over 20 security operatives and vigilantes were reportedly killed while defending rural communities. According to the Kanam Development Association (KADA), the victims included 12 security personnel, among them two senior military officers, and eight vigilantes. The patrol team had been traveling through Garga, Kyaram, and Gyambau communities on routine security operations when they were ambushed by heavily armed bandits.
After the ambush, the attackers reportedly stormed Kyaram, looting properties worth millions of naira and rustling a large number of cattle belonging to residents. KADA described the killings as “deeply painful and unacceptable,” noting that communities along the borders of Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi have endured repeated attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling for years.
The attack in Anguwan Rukuba has left residents in shock and mourning. With tensions rising across the community, locals are calling for urgent security reinforcement to prevent further bloodshed.
