Ahmadu Fintiri has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fintiri announced his defection during a statewide broadcast on Friday, confirming that he, members of his cabinet, and other PDP officials in Adamawa State have all moved with him to the APC. According to the governor, the decision was made in what he described as the best developmental interest of the people of Adamawa.

His defection marks a significant gain for the APC, making Fintiri the 30th serving governor in Nigeria to join the party — a move that further strengthens the APC’s dominance across the country.

The announcement comes after weeks of political rumour and tension in Adamawa, following the resignation of several lawmakers from the state House of Assembly amid internal PDP crises. Fintiri’s decision also reflects a broader trend of high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, with governors from states such as Taraba, Kano, and Plateau recently switching allegiance to the APC.

Political analysts say this development could have far-reaching implications for both state and national politics, as parties continue to realign and jockey for advantage in the lead-up to the next elections.
