A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread discussion online after sharing a tragic story about a neighbour who allegedly died after violating her husband’s traditional cultural beliefs. Her post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), served as a warning about the importance of understanding a partner’s cultural background before marriage.
Alleged Tradition Linked to Woman’s Death
According to the post, the incident involved a married woman whose husband is from Orokam in Benue State. The community reportedly observes a spiritual belief tied to Alekwu, which, she explained, punishes married women who are unfaithful.
The woman allegedly fell ill after committing adultery, violating the cultural rule that married women must remain faithful to their husbands. The illness was described as incurable, and she reportedly died, with the cultural belief cited as the cause. The husband, according to the post, appeared indifferent after her death.
The woman who shared the story warned, “Before you marry someone, please know their tradition. We just lost a neighbor because of her husband’s tradition.”

Social Media Reactions
The post quickly drew mixed reactions, sparking debates about culture, marriage, and personal responsibility.
-
Understanding a partner’s culture: User Temmi emphasised knowing a partner’s family and beliefs before marriage. “That is why it is very important you know the family you are getting married to. Everything is not love, not even with someone that really believes in their culture,” she wrote.
-
Dangers of harmful traditions: User TheRave described the story as tragic, warning about cultural practices that could threaten human life. “That’s a tragic story. If true, it highlights how dangerous it can be when harmful traditions or beliefs override basic human safety and rights. No cultural practice should ever cost someone their life,” they said.
-
Focus on adultery: Some commenters argued the issue was adultery rather than tradition. Jobby wrote, “If the rule is simply ‘don’t sleep with anyone except your husband,’ that’s literally the basic expectation of marriage everywhere. The real mystery here is why people are debating tradition instead of the adultery.”
-
Respecting cultural norms: Others pointed out the seriousness of cultural rules in parts of Benue and Kogi states. Fresh Boi wrote, “All this Benue, Kogi… they don’t play with these things. You must not argue with your parents or cheat—death straight.”
-
Personal responsibility and loyalty: Big G expressed sympathy but questioned the woman’s actions. “I don’t support the tradition or her death, but she obviously brought it upon herself. Too sad.” Bratva added, “You should learn about your husband’s tradition, have self-respect, self-worth, and dignity, and respect your husband and your marriage.”
The story has reignited conversations online about the balance between respecting cultural traditions and safeguarding human life, highlighting the complexities that can arise in marriages where deep-rooted customs are strictly enforced.
