Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer and activist, has accused former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike of allegedly confiscating land belonging to ordinary Nigerians and reallocating it to friends, family members, and political allies.
Adeyanju claimed that since Wike assumed the role of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), he has allegedly acted beyond the bounds of the law by revoking land titles without proper justification.

“You cannot seize someone’s land and transfer it to another person unless it serves the public interest, such as for constructing roads, hospitals, or airports. But what Wike appears to be doing is redirecting land owned by ordinary citizens to his children and political associates,” Adeyanju said.

He referenced Santos Properties, which reportedly developed 30 hectares of land in Gaduwa after fulfilling all necessary payments. According to Adeyanju, although there was an agreement to return a portion of the land to the government for public use, Wike allegedly insisted on taking control of the entire property.

Adeyanju also warned that such practices could have broader economic and environmental repercussions. He noted that banks are reportedly hesitant to accept land titles as collateral due to the minister’s alleged unpredictable revocation of property rights.

He further stated:

“Yes, I want to commend officer A.M. Yerema, who has stood firm despite verbal abuse and intimidation from Wike, who often behaves recklessly. He seems unaware that holding public office carries responsibility. Normally, the military should not be involved in protecting anyone’s land, but Wike’s actions since becoming FCT Minister suggest he believes he is above the law.”

Adeyanju added, “Housing is crucial for economic growth, yet Wike’s alleged conduct has disrupted land tenure systems, creating uncertainty for both developers and homeowners.”

These statements come in the wake of a widely shared confrontation between the minister and military officer Yerema.

bigjeff__01″Wike made a very big mistake, since he decided to come to the scene and saw that military have taken over all you should do is to call the CDS or the Chief of army staff or any of the service chiefs to inform them of the development. Not by shouting and trying to command the soldiers, they won’t and can’t take orders from you and that’s just how it is: soldiers take orders from their superiors not a civilian: the only civilian they take orders from is the president that’s why constitution made the president to be the commander in chief of all arm forces. Wike just allowed himself to be humiliated instead of applying possible logic and diplomacy.”
