Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, has officially resigned from the party with immediate effect.

In a statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso explained that his decision comes in response to the changing dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape, and the need for a fresh political direction that would allow him to pursue meaningful national change.

Describing the move as a difficult but necessary choice, he reflected on his long-standing role in the NNPP, where he served as National Leader and led the party as its flagbearer in the last presidential election. Kwankwaso expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and represent the party on the national stage.

According to him, Nigeria’s current political trajectory requires a strategic realignment with a platform that offers “the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”

While Kwankwaso did not publicly reveal his next political home, sources suggest he may soon join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a potential new chapter in his political journey.

This development marks a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, given Kwankwaso’s influence in Kano State and across northern Nigeria, where he has built a strong grassroots network and longstanding presence in opposition politics.
