Veteran Nollywood actress Remi Surutu has sparked conversations online after sharing her views on ethnic unity and the rising cost of fuel.

In a recent statement, the actress praised a family she described as kind and well-meaning, while expressing concern over what she perceives as a lack of unity among the Yoruba people. According to her, internal criticism and division often take precedence over collective progress.

Surutu also addressed the ongoing debate surrounding fuel price increases, coming to the defense of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, popularly known as Asiwaju.

She argued that global dynamics and decisions made by world leaders play a significant role in determining fuel prices, rather than placing sole responsibility on the Nigerian government.

“They are extremely good people—the wife, the husband, the children—they are good people,” she said. “But the fact is, we Yorubas don’t always support ourselves; we criticize one another too much. If we can take a moment to reflect and look at what is happening around the world, we’ll realize we are still managing.

“I even had an argument with someone who blamed Asiwaju for the increase in petrol prices. He is not solely responsible. Fuel prices are influenced by global forces and decisions made by world leaders.”

Her remarks have since generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians weighing in on both her stance on unity and her comments about fuel pricing.
