The Edo State Government has reacted to reports of an alleged assassination attempt on former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, during his recent visit to the state.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, the Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, stated that Obi, as a politically exposed figure, should have formally informed the state government ahead of his visit.

Afegbua explained that earlier remarks attributed to Governor Monday Okpebholo had been misunderstood.

“People misinterpreted what Governor Okpebholo meant when he said that anytime Peter Obi wants to come to Edo, he should inform the state government. Because Obi is a politically exposed person, we would expect that he would extend the courtesy,” he said.

The Commissioner also urged the public not to sensationalise the incident, suggesting it may have stemmed from internal disagreements within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“What happened in Edo should be located within the ambit of the ADC — one factional group of the ADC versus another faction,” he added.

The alleged attack on Obi and other ADC chieftains has since generated nationwide reactions, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.
