Barely a day after President Bola Tinubu visited Plateau State to reassure grieving communities, fresh violence has erupted, raising serious questions about the fragile security situation on the ground.

In the early hours of Friday, suspected attackers stormed Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area, killing a 51-year-old man identified as Dalyop Betobeje. The assault, reportedly launched from the Rankum (Mahanga) axis, has left residents shaken and reignited fears across already tense communities.

Fresh Attack Deepens Anxiety

The timing of the attack has unsettled many, coming shortly after the President’s high-profile visit to Jos, where he had pledged that such tragedies would not recur. For residents, the latest incident feels like a painful contradiction of that assurance.

Local leaders described the attack as a major setback to ongoing peace efforts, warning that the cycle of violence continues to threaten lives and livelihoods in rural areas.

Another Killing Days Earlier

The incident in Riyom follows closely on the heels of another deadly attack in Heipang District of Bassa Local Government Area.

Gunmen reportedly invaded Ban village on Wednesday night, killing a secondary school student, Gloria Godwin, injuring several others, and destroying properties.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association condemned the violence, calling it “brutal and senseless,” while stressing that communities can no longer continue to live under constant threat.

Security Response and Calls for Justice

Security agencies have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to track down those responsible.

Community leaders, while acknowledging the response of security operatives, are demanding more than reactive measures.

“It is imperative that security agencies sustain this momentum and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. Our communities deserve safety and peace,” a local leader stated.

Residents have also been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, even as fears persist over the possibility of further attacks.

Tinubu’s Assurance Faces Test

During his visit to Plateau, President Tinubu had assured victims and families that the government was committed to ending the cycle of violence.

“I promise you this experience will not repeat itself,” he said while consoling those affected.

However, the latest developments have cast a shadow over that promise, highlighting the urgency for more decisive, sustained, and visible security action.

A Region Under Pressure

Plateau State has witnessed a troubling resurgence of attacks in recent months, particularly in rural communities. The pattern of violence continues to test the government’s capacity to restore lasting peace, despite repeated assurances and interventions.

For many residents, the question remains not just about promises—but about protection.
