Aisha Yesufu has advised opposition leaders Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to adopt more practical campaign strategies ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general election. She stressed that many Nigerians are currently more concerned about survival due to the country’s economic challenges.

In a post shared on X on Thursday, Yesufu reacted to a viral video showing a woman defending Bola Ahmed Tinubu after receiving rice reportedly distributed by the government.

Focus on people’s daily struggles

According to Yesufu, the worsening economic situation in Nigeria has left many citizens preoccupied with meeting their basic needs rather than engaging in political debates.

She argued that poverty has spread widely across the country, and that the current hardship has made even small acts of assistance meaningful to struggling Nigerians.

Campaign in a language people understand

The activist urged opposition parties to connect with voters in ways that reflect their everyday realities. She explained that hunger often makes it difficult for people to focus on political ideas or policy discussions.

“Citizens were deliberately impoverished, monies taken away from their pockets and food made expensive so that little tokens will matter to them,” she wrote.

“As we go into the 2027 election, the opposition must campaign to the people in the language the people will understand.”

Yesufu suggested that campaign strategies should address both immediate needs and long-term policies.

“For those who need bread, give them bread with your picture on it. For those who need policies, give them policy documents with your picture on it.”

She concluded by emphasizing the impact of hunger on decision-making.

“A hungry man or woman cannot reason. He or she just wants the rumbling in their tummy to stop.”

Her comments have since sparked discussions online about campaign strategies, poverty, and how political messages resonate with voters facing economic hardship.
