A Nigerian lady has sparked debate online after sharing her experience surrounding a friend’s wedding and the rising cost of bridal asoebi.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she recounted how her decision not to buy the asoebi later strained her friendship with the bride, despite the financial support she offered.

What Happened at the Wedding

According to her post, the bride invited her to join the bridal asoebi, which was priced at ₦100,000.

She said she politely declined the offer, explaining that she does not usually buy bridal asoebi.

However, on the wedding day, she revealed that she gifted the bride an envelope containing more than ₦100,000 in cash.

The bride was said to have happily accepted the gift at the event.

Friendship Turns Shaky

Days after the wedding, the woman said she began hearing negative comments allegedly made about her.

She eventually confronted the bride, who admitted that she was unhappy about her decision not to buy the asoebi.

According to the lady, the disagreement has since strained their friendship.

She also revealed that she has only worn asoebi twice in her entire life and has never paid for it.

Her Belief on Bridal Asoebi

Describing herself as old-school, the woman insisted that bridal asoebi should be given freely, not sold.

She questioned when and how paying for bridal asoebi became a normal practice at Nigerian weddings.

Her post has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some users supporting her stance, while others argued that wearing asoebi is a sign of loyalty and support for the bride.

The debate continues as Nigerians weigh in on tradition, friendship, and the rising cost of weddings.
