A Nigerian man has drawn praise online after returning ₦2.2 million mistakenly credited to his Opay account — and surprisingly rejecting a ₦50,000 appreciation gift that followed.

The man, identified as Aliyu Tunde Muhammad Elyaqub on Facebook, shared that the unexpected transfer happened while he was using his phone. Shortly after, the sender reached out, sounding confused and distressed over the error.

Despite the significant amount — which he admitted was a large portion of his monthly income — he chose to return the money immediately and sent proof of the transaction.

However, what caught even more attention was his decision to decline a ₦50,000 token of appreciation sent by the sender afterward.

According to him, doing the right thing should not come with a price.

“I believe I don’t have to be paid for being kind, or for doing what I must do,” he explained.

He added that the sender was extremely grateful, describing the moment as though he had been “saved from serious trouble.”

His story has since gone viral, with many Nigerians praising his honesty, while others questioned whether they would have done the same in similar circumstances.

💬 Reader Question:

Would you return such money and reject a reward, or keep the appreciation as a thank you?
