A Nigerian student has sparked debate online after revealing that he ended a budding relationship over ₦50, stressing that “every naira matters” given his current financial situation.
The young man shared his story on X (formerly Twitter), explaining how what seemed like a harmless moment during a casual outing quickly turned into what he described as a major red flag.
Shawarma, Change, and an Unexpected Comment
According to his post, he and the lady had gone off campus to buy shawarma. The total came to ₦2,950. He paid ₦3,000 and received ₦50 as change.
As they walked away, he said he was holding both the shawarma and the ₦50 when the lady casually took the change from his hand.
“She said, ‘You’re the man now.’ I laughed. Thought she was joking. She wasn’t,” he wrote.
What initially felt playful, he said, became more concerning later that evening when she brought it up again.
“She actually said, ‘Next time you should just budget properly so you’re not collecting change.’”
“₦50 Today Is Pure Water Tomorrow”
The student admitted that the comment did not sit well with him. To him, the issue was not just about ₦50, but about attitude and financial values.
“Collecting change?? Madam, I am a student. ₦50 today is pure water tomorrow. It’s part of the financial strategy,” he stated.
He explained that the remark made him question their compatibility, particularly when it came to money management.
“From that moment, I just started seeing red flags everywhere. If ₦50 is nothing to you, what about ₦500? ₦5k? My future salary?” he added.
Rather than confront her directly, he chose to quietly distance himself.
“I didn’t argue. I just slowly reduced communication. Exams suddenly became very important,” he said.
The post has since generated mixed reactions online. While some users defended him, noting that financial discipline is crucial — especially in Nigeria’s current economic climate — others felt he may have overreacted, suggesting the lady could have been teasing and that better communication might have cleared up the misunderstanding.
