Governor Caleb Mutfwang has clarified comments made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the absence of electricity during his recent visit to Jos, stating that the issue was limited to the airport runway and not the entire state.
Speaking in an interview on Arise Television, the governor explained that the president’s concern had been widely misunderstood.
Not a Statewide Power Outage
During his visit to Plateau State following reports of violence in some communities, President Tinubu reportedly expressed concern about the lack of lighting at the Jos airport. This sparked reactions, with many assuming the state was experiencing a general power failure.
However, Mutfwang stressed that this was not the case.
“The President said the airport runway has no light. No one can say Plateau State has no light,” he stated.
Airport Responsibility Lies with FAAN
The governor further explained that the airport is managed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and that the issue of runway lighting has been a known challenge.
“FAAN is aware that the Jos airport does not have runway lighting. This is an issue we are currently addressing with them,” he said.
Efforts to Upgrade the Airport
Mutfwang also revealed that the state government had already taken steps to improve the facility. He noted that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed last year to upgrade the airport into an international cargo hub.
According to him, once the project is completed, the lighting issue and other infrastructure gaps will be resolved.
Setting the Record Straight
The clarification aims to correct public perception and reassure residents that the electricity situation in Plateau State remains stable, despite the concerns raised during the presidential visit.
