Healthcare services across Nigeria may face major disruption as the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike starting from 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The decision comes after the Federal Government reportedly halted the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table — a key agreement reached following the doctors’ 2025 industrial action.

Speaking on the development, NARD President, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, described the move as unfortunate, noting that it undermines previous agreements between the association and the government.

The resolution to proceed with the strike was reached during an emergency virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council held over the weekend.

“After extensive deliberations, NEC resolved to embark on a total and indefinite strike beginning April 7,” he stated.

The planned industrial action is expected to significantly affect public hospitals across the country, raising concerns among patients who depend on government healthcare facilities.

As the situation unfolds, many Nigerians are watching closely to see if both parties can reach a last-minute agreement to avert the strike.

Do you think strikes like this are the only way for doctors to be heard, or should there be better alternatives?
