Afrobeats star Rema has opened up about how he prepares for his performances, revealing that his pre-show routine includes a mix of tequila, cigarettes, and prayer.

Speaking with Dazed during Milan Fashion Week — where he walked the runway for Diesel — the “Calm Down” hitmaker shared what helps him get into the right mindset before delivering his high-energy stage shows.

“A little Tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” he said.

Rema explained that performing on stage is far more demanding than walking a fashion runway. According to him, live performances require careful breath control, stamina, and energy management to keep the audience fully engaged from start to finish.

He also revealed that he has been drawing creative inspiration from Sudanese cultural live music, which has influenced his artistic expression. However, he admitted that smoking cigarettes remains his biggest vice.

Known for his electrifying stage presence and distinct style, Rema said he takes deliberate steps to mentally and physically prepare so he can fully connect with his audience.

In a previous interview, the singer also shared his views on relationships, stating that he prefers stylish women over wealthy ones, noting that financial stability is not something he looks for in a partner.

Fans have since reacted to his candid comments, with many praising his honesty and dedication to his craft, while others jokingly teased him about his “pre-show tequila ritual.”
