President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that he will donate all the salaries he has earned since taking office to support injured military personnel and the families of fallen soldiers.

The President made the announcement on Sunday as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, and directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to promptly establish a dedicated welfare fund for the initiative.

According to available figures from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, the President’s monthly basic salary is ₦1,171,568.20, which amounts to about ₦14.06 million per year.

Across a four-year tenure spanning May 29, 2023, to May 29, 2027, this comes to an estimated ₦56.2 million in basic salary.

However, the President’s total earnings also cover several additional allowances, including a hardship allowance worth 50 percent of the basic salary and a constituency allowance set at 250 percent, among others.

The President said:

“As I mark my 74th birthday, I honour the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who continue to serve our nation with courage and sacrifice.

Today, I have instructed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a special account that will serve as a dedicated fund for our servicemen and women, particularly those injured while on duty, as well as the families of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As a personal pledge, every salary I have received since assuming office will be paid into this account as the initial funding, regardless of the existing insurance and welfare packages already in place for members of the armed forces. This fund is specifically intended to provide direct support for wounded personnel, especially those who have lost limbs, and for the widows, widowers, and children of fallen heroes who gave their lives in service to our beloved country.

I also urge our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my associates, and all well-meaning Nigerians to lend their support to this noble initiative. The account details will be released in due course.

We must always remember those who risk their lives to secure our peace, as well as the sacrifices their families continue to bear.

This is not an act of charity; it is a responsibility.

And we will carry it out.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
Federal Republic of Nigeria”
