A man has called for stricter enforcement of punishments for crimes such as kidnapping in Nigeria, warning that weak consequences and lack of public accountability are driving the surge in criminal activities.

Parenting, Accountability, and Society

During a recent public discussion, he highlighted concerns over poor parenting and weak disciplinary practices, arguing that these factors contribute to future criminal behaviour.

“When a child misbehaves and faces no real consequences, what the mother is doing is breeding a criminal that could grow up to destroy lives or become a disgrace to the family,” he said.

He stressed that both family upbringing and societal enforcement of laws play critical roles in shaping responsible citizens.

The Need for Visible Enforcement

The speaker questioned the effectiveness of Nigeria’s justice system, noting that while laws exist to punish serious crimes like kidnapping, enforcement remains weak and often invisible to the public.

“We have a constitution that governs this country, but we don’t see its full execution. Kidnapping carries serious punishment, yet we don’t hear what happens to those caught. Until consequences are enforced and seen, others will continue to see it as a profitable venture.”

He further highlighted the lasting trauma suffered by kidnapping survivors, noting that many victims rarely return to normal life, reinforcing the urgent need for decisive action.

A Call to Action

His message serves as a reminder that addressing crime requires both strong laws and visible enforcement. Without consequences, he argued, crimes like kidnapping will continue to threaten lives and communities across Nigeria.
