Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has shed light on the behind-the-scenes events during Nigeria’s #EndSARS protests, specifically addressing the involvement of Afrobeat superstar Davido.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Sowore explained that while the movement had clear leaders, the government struggled with figures it could not control.
“#EndSARS had leaders, but the problem was that the government didn’t want it to be led by people they cannot control,” Sowore stated.
He added that Davido was actively participating in planning meetings for the protests but abruptly pulled back after traveling to Abuja for a meeting with the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
“Davido was attending every #EndSARS meeting. When he got to Abuja to meet with the IGP, before he got upstairs, they were telling him they want to investigate him for the murder of one of his aides. By the time he got upstairs, he said, ‘I didn’t come to Abuja to protest,’” Sowore revealed.
The revelation has reignited discussions about the #EndSARS movement, which began in 2020 as a campaign against police brutality, particularly targeting the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Sowore’s account raises questions about the challenges activists faced from authorities, and how government pressure may have influenced key participants during the protests.
