Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has shed light on a long-standing issue in Nigeria’s film industry, explaining why many actors continue to face financial challenges despite years of work and fame.

Speaking during a recent appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask with Isbae U, the respected actress pointed to the lack of royalty payments as a major factor affecting actors’ earnings.

“We get paid once, that’s all”

According to her, most Nollywood actors are only paid for their appearance during production, with no additional income when movies are resold, rebroadcast, or distributed across different platforms.

She contrasted this with what is obtainable in more structured film industries abroad, where actors continue to earn from their work long after production through royalties and residual payments.

In her words, even lesser-known actors in developed countries receive ongoing income from projects they participated in years ago—something she says is largely absent in Nollywood.

Shift to YouTube and digital platforms

Ozokwor noted that this reality has pushed many actors and filmmakers to explore alternative distribution channels, especially YouTube, where they can retain more control over their content and earnings.

The shift, she explained, is part of a broader attempt by industry players to secure more sustainable income streams in the absence of structured royalty systems.

A deeper industry concern

Her comments have reignited conversations about the structure of Nollywood and the need for reforms that protect creatives financially.

While the industry continues to grow in global recognition and output, many insiders believe that without proper compensation frameworks, actors may continue to struggle behind the scenes.
