The Lagos Assembly crisis almost claimed a big victim the Chief of Staff to the President himself.
Femi Gbajabiamila has opened up about how the political drama that shook Lagos State almost cost him his job. And at the center of it all? Desmond Elliot. 🗣️
Recall the chaos. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was impeached in January 2025. Mojisola Meranda became the first female Speaker. Then Obasa fought back. Courts got involved. After 49 days, Meranda stepped down. Obasa returned. 💀
But behind the scenes, Gbajabiamila was fighting for his political life.
At an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, he revealed that President Tinubu personally confronted him at his Abuja residence. The President had heard allegations linking Desmond Elliot to the impeachment plot. Gbajabiamila said he defended Elliot at first.
Then he reached out to Elliot. He asked him to publicly deny any involvement. Clear his name. End the speculation.
Elliot refused. No statement. No denial. Nothing.
That silence nearly cost Gbajabiamila his position as Chief of Staff. He said the DSS Director-General also called him, saying his own name was being dragged into the mess. Only his close relationship with Tinubu saved him.
He also accused Elliot of fueling religious tension in Surulere and dividing constituents.
The internet is reacting. One person wrote: “So a simple denial could have saved him? Why did Elliot keep quiet?” Another said: “This is deeper than politics. Something is off.” 😤
Someone else added: “Gbajabiamila is lucky. Any other person would have been shown the door.”
Morning gist. Hot political tea. What do you think why did Elliot refuse to speak?
