Sadness has swept across Nigeria’s entertainment industry following the death of veteran actor Davis Ofor, widely known for his iconic role as Clarus in the classic sitcom New Masquerade. He passed away at the age of 85.

The news was confirmed by fellow actor Tony Akposheri, who took to Instagram to express his grief and pay tribute to his longtime friend.

In an emotional message, Akposheri recalled their last moments together during the New Year, describing it as a time filled with laughter, memories, and hope — unaware it would be their final meeting.

“Today, my heart is heavy. Davis Ofor, fondly known as Clarus, is gone. We crossed into the New Year together, laughing and sharing memories… none of us knew time was already counting differently for you,” he wrote.

He went on to describe Ofor as more than just a screen legend, but a man whose warmth, humour, and presence left lasting impressions on everyone around him.

Davis Ofor became a household name through New Masquerade, one of Nigeria’s most beloved television comedies that aired in the 1980s. His portrayal of Clarus stood out for its wit and originality, helping to define early Nigerian TV comedy and inspiring generations of entertainers.

Even decades later, his character remains unforgettable — a symbol of a golden era in Nigerian television.

As of the time of this report, the cause of his death has not been disclosed. However, tributes have continued to pour in, with fans and colleagues celebrating a life that brought laughter and joy to millions.
