A woman has sparked widespread reactions on social media after sharing an emotional video in which she apologised to older women she previously criticised for remaining unmarried.
In the viral clip, she reflected on her younger years and admitted that she once judged women in their 30s and 40s who were not married at the time.
According to her, her perspective has changed as she now approaches a similar stage in life without being married or in a relationship.
“I used to ask what they were doing with their lives”
In the video, she described her message as an apology directed at women she once looked up to while growing up, saying she now regrets her past mindset.
She said:
“This is an apology video. I want to apologise to some set of people. I want to apologise to all my big sisters, all those people that I knew as big sisters when I was growing up.
“I’m always like, ‘Oh, you’re 30 and you’re not married, what are you doing with your life? You’re 40 and you’re not married, what are you doing with your life?’”
She explained that as she has grown older, she now understands that marriage is not something that comes easily for everyone.
“I’m now in the same position”
The woman further admitted that she has reached a point in her life where she is not married and not in a relationship, which has given her a new perspective on the issue.
She said:
“I’m around your age now. Yes, I’m not married. And now, I’m just getting to know why you’re not married.”
“I’m sorry for marry-shaming you”
Expressing remorse, she apologised for what she described as “marry-shaming” other women in the past.
“I am saying sorry. I used to marry-shame you that time. I am saying sorry because me like this, I’m not in a relationship, not to talk of wanting to get married.
“I never knew. I did not know that it’s hard to get married. I did not know. I am sorry.”
Her emotional confession has since triggered conversations online, with many social media users reflecting on the pressure placed on women regarding marriage and the importance of avoiding judgment based on marital status.
