A man has ignited a heated debate on social media after revealing that his wife chose to relocate abroad alone after he asked her to suspend her own travel plans and remain in Nigeria to care for his elderly mother.
Sharing his story online, the man explained that he lived with his mother before getting married. After tying the knot, he and his wife agreed to apply for UK visas together with the hope of relocating as a couple to begin a new life abroad.
However, things took an unexpected turn when his mother reportedly expressed discomfort with the idea of living alone. According to him, she preferred that his wife stay behind to keep her company while he travelled first.
Believing it was the best solution, the husband said he asked his wife to postpone her relocation plans and remain in Nigeria to care for his mother until he settled abroad.
The request, however, did not sit well with his wife, leading to a disagreement. He revealed that the issue eventually became a silent one, with neither of them bringing it up again.
To his surprise, his wife later informed him that she had successfully secured her own visa and would be travelling abroad instead.
Recounting the conversation, he wrote:
“Later, I asked her to put her plans on hold so I could travel first while she stayed behind to take care of my mom.”
He continued:
“Now, she has suddenly told me that she has gotten her visa and plans to travel instead. She said I should stay behind to take care of my mother, and that once she settles abroad, she’ll visit us often.”
Seeking opinions from other social media users, the man asked:
“Is it a bad thing as a man to instruct my own wife on what to do?”
His post quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions online.
While some people argued that looking after elderly parents is a responsibility that should be shared within the family, others believed it was unfair to expect a newly married woman to sacrifice her own relocation opportunity to become her mother-in-law’s caregiver.
The incident has since sparked broader conversations about marriage, gender roles, family expectations, and the delicate balance between supporting ageing parents and prioritising a spouse’s future.
