A video showing the interrogation and sentencing of a young man identified as Ayuba has sparked widespread debate online after it emerged that he was sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
In the 1-minute-27-second clip, Ayuba is seen sitting on the floor, visibly distressed, as he answers questions from an interrogator.
Court sentence sparks online backlash
Speaking in broken English, he identifies himself and mentions associates named Lashif, Azim, and Mohammed, whom he says work nearby doing cleaning and other manual labour.
When questioned about the alleged theft, Ayuba appears confused and repeatedly insists that he did not carry a bag.
Moments later, he is informed that he will be going to jail. Clearly shocked, he asks, “Why jail?” before confirming that he has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Despite his shock, Ayuba repeatedly thanked God, saying, “Thank God, thank God,” as he explained that he hoped to reunite with his mother after serving his sentence.
Social media questions justice and punishment
The video quickly sparked intense reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the severity of the punishment.
Several users expressed sympathy for Ayuba, arguing that a prison sentence was excessive for a minor offence and suggesting alternatives such as community service or rehabilitation.
Others used the incident to highlight what they described as inequality within the justice system, noting that poor offenders are often punished publicly, while wealthy individuals accused of far more serious crimes rarely face similar consequences.
While opinions remain divided, the case has reignited broader conversations about justice, proportional punishment, and the treatment of young offenders within Nigeria’s legal system.
