A Nigerian man has sparked widespread debate online after sharing his frustrations about what he believes are unfair expectations in modern relationships.
The video, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @gmltony, quickly gained traction and drew mixed reactions from users.
Man Questions “One-Sided” Relationship Expectations
In the clip, the man expressed concerns about what he described as double standards in dating.
“So if I get you a gift and we have sex, you’ve paid me back. But if you get me a gift, I’m supposed to reciprocate by getting you another gift, abi?” he asked.
He went on to question birthday expectations in relationships:
“When it’s my birthday, I’ll take you out and buy you things. When it’s your birthday, I’ll still take you out and buy you things. I’m expected to do more than what your ex did for you. But if I mention how my ex used to cook and clean for me, you’ll say you’re not my ex and that she was acting like a slave.”
Transport, Dates, and Financial Pressure
The man also spoke about what he sees as financial imbalance when it comes to dating logistics.
“I’m supposed to send you transport money if you’re coming to my place. But if I’m coming to yours, nobody talks about transport — and I’m still expected to buy you something on the way. If I suggest we go out, I’m the one paying. If you suggest we go out, I’m still the one paying. You see all these girls’ maths, ehn…”
His comments have since ignited conversations online, with some agreeing that modern dating comes with heavy financial expectations for men, while others argued that relationships should be built on mutual understanding rather than strict scorekeeping.
The video continues to generate reactions as social media users weigh in on the evolving dynamics of dating and gender roles.
