The Delta State Police Command has revealed a disturbing case involving a 17-year-old girl who allegedly staged her own kidnapping in order to extort ₦500,000 from her mother.

According to a statement from the police, the teenager reportedly conspired with friends to fake the abduction and demand ransom. The money, which was paid by her unsuspecting mother — a farmer who works hard to provide for her family — was allegedly used by the girl to buy clothes.

“She connived with her friends, faked her own kidnap, and extorted a ransom of ₦500,000 from her innocent mother who does farming jobs in the village to feed,” the police stated.

The incident has left many shocked, particularly given the financial and emotional toll on the mother.

Parenting and Vigilance

The police used the case to stress the importance of proper upbringing and parental guidance, warning that a lack of supervision can expose young people to negative influences.

“Train your children so they don’t end up becoming a problem to you and society,” the Delta State Police Command cautioned.

Authorities also urged parents to pay closer attention to their children’s activities and peer groups, noting that early intervention and consistent guidance are essential in preventing youths from engaging in criminal or deceptive behavior.

Social Implications

The case has sparked widespread discussion about parenting, peer pressure, and moral values in both rural and urban communities. Many observers say it highlights how easily young people can be drawn into harmful schemes without strong guidance and support at home.
