Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police (IGP), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s security leadership.

According to sources within the Presidency, Egbetokun was asked to step aside during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, February 23, 2026.

“Yes, Egbetokun is gone,” a presidential aide confirmed, noting that a formal announcement was being finalised and would be released shortly.

Senior government and police sources indicate that Tunji Disu is expected to take over as the new IGP. Disu currently serves as an Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos and is widely regarded as the President’s preferred candidate for the role.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. His tenure, however, faced sustained public scrutiny before his eventual removal.

Efforts to obtain official comments from Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin and Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
