he Ugandan police have clarified that 46 people died in the tragic accident along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, not 63 as earlier reported.

The police said the clarification followed fresh assessments from hospitals and rescue teams at the scene of the crash, which occurred at Kitaleeba Village in Kiryandongo District on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the police said, “We confirm that the total number of fatalities resulting from the tragic fatal crash along the Kampala–Gulu Highway at Kitaleeba Village stands at 46, according to the latest update from the hospital.”

The statement, signed by SP Kananura Michael, the Police Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, added that several victims were initially counted among the dead because they were found unconscious during the rescue operations.

Earlier reports had suggested that 63 people were killed when two buses and two other vehicles collided on the busy highway late Tuesday night.

The police explained that one of the buses, which was trying to overtake, rammed into another vehicle coming from the opposite direction, leading to a chain collision involving four vehicles.

“Several passengers sustained injuries of varying severity, and many are still receiving treatment in different hospitals,” the police statement added.

Authorities have since warned motorists to avoid reckless overtaking and excessive speeding, which remain major causes of fatal crashes across the country.
