A Nigerian woman has sparked debate on social media after questioning the widely used phrase “understanding girlfriend” in relationships where both partners are struggling financially.

The woman shared her opinion on X, expressing confusion about why some women proudly describe themselves as “understanding” even when both partners appear to be facing similar financial challenges.

Lady questions idea of “understanding girlfriend”

According to her, in many relationships where both the man and woman are broke, the girlfriend is often praised for being patient or supportive, even though both individuals are equally affected by the hardship.

She pointed out that in some cases, the boyfriend may be the one hustling daily to make ends meet while the girlfriend has no job or source of income, yet she is still described as the one “understanding” the situation.

The woman also highlighted scenarios where a man uses the little money he earns to buy groceries and cook for both of them, but the girlfriend still claims she is the one making sacrifices in the relationship.

She further noted that even in moments of intimacy, the experience is shared by both partners, which led her to question why the narrative often portrays only the woman as the one enduring difficulties.

Her post

In her words:

“I stand corrected, but…
There’s nothing like an ‘understanding girlfriend.’ It doesn’t exist.

You are broke, your boyfriend is broke, but na you dey understand.

He’s the one hustling, you don’t have a handwork or a job but na you dey understand.

You don’t have food to eat, you went to your boyfriend’s place, from his hustle he bought groceries, he cooked, you ate. But na you dey understand.

You both had sex. He gave you his body to satisfy your sexual desire. You gave him your body for the same pleasure, but na you dey understand.

My question is: what exactly are you understanding?

I don’t get it. Make it make sense. 🤷‍♀️

Mind you, I stand corrected.”

Her post has since triggered widespread reactions online, with many users debating the meaning of being supportive in a relationship and whether the label “understanding partner” is sometimes used unfairly.
