A viral video making rounds on social media has sparked intense debate after a woman described marriage as a form of “sex work,” a remark that has drawn strong criticism as well as mixed reactions from online users.
The video, widely shared on X, shows the woman explaining her view that marriage often involves an exchange of roles between partners, particularly when financial support and domestic responsibilities are involved.
Controversial statement on marriage

In the clip, the woman acknowledged that her opinion might be controversial.
“This is going to be very controversial to say, but marriage is also a form of sex work because a lot of women enter marriage from a place where the man is ideally going to take care of them financially and provide a home for both of them,” she said.
She went on to explain that, in many relationships, women take on specific roles within the household.
“What you are doing is fulfilling a role. You become some sort of homemaker or homekeeper,” she said, adding that the responsibilities may include raising children, managing the household, and supporting the family.
According to her, many women enter such arrangements with the expectation that their efforts in the home will be matched with emotional support, financial stability, and validation from their partners.
“You’re raising and rearing the kids, parenting with him, and sharing a relationship with the hope that the trade-off will be validation, love, and upkeep,” she added.
She also argued that such arrangements tend to work as long as both partners continue to fulfil their expected roles.
“The man believes that if he keeps fulfilling his role for you, the arrangement works, because marriage itself is an arrangement.”
Explaining the comparison
The woman further clarified why she compared marriage to prostitution, noting that the exchange between partners may not always appear openly transactional.
“Why I said it’s prostitution is because, while it may not look like you’re doing something purely for a transaction on the surface, there is still something being exchanged in return,” she said.
Her remarks have since triggered widespread discussion online, with some people strongly disagreeing with the comparison while others debate the idea that certain aspects of marriage can involve an exchange of responsibilities and expectations.
