A Nigerian man has sparked reactions on social media after revealing the personal experiences that led him to stop attending church. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), he explained that questions from others about his absence prompted him to share his story publicly.

The man said his perspective on church and religion changed significantly after relocating to Lagos. He recounted challenges he faced, including experiences that made him feel unwelcome or judged.

He explained that competition within certain churches contributed to his decision. “When I came to Lagos, I was driving a Spider Camry 014. At one church on the Island, I was told I couldn’t park inside, while bigger cars were allowed,” he said.

He also highlighted instances where he felt some churches prioritised money over compassion, sharing a particularly painful experience involving his mother. When she suffered a stroke, the family faced financial difficulties in managing her medical care.

According to him, instead of receiving support, the family was pressured over unpaid tithes. “Pastors were calling us about tithes while my mother was sick. At some point, if we didn’t bring money, they wouldn’t even pray for us. That was when I realised something was wrong,” he added.

The story has prompted mixed reactions online. While some users sympathised with his experiences and criticised certain practices in churches, others reminded the public not to generalise, noting that many places of worship continue to focus on faith, care, and community support.
