Nurses at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu have raised urgent concerns about the deteriorating state of the facility, warning that current conditions are unsafe for both patients and healthcare workers.

In a distressing video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the nurses described how the hospital is operating without basic necessities such as running water, electricity and oxygen essentials for even the most routine medical procedures.

One of the nurses captured the severity of the situation, saying:

“There’s no water, there’s no light, mosquitoes everywhere. I don’t know what the government is doing about it. There’s a woman in labour right now and there’s no light. What if complications arise? What do we do? What if the baby needs an incubator? This is a general hospital, yet the conditions are so bad. There’s no oxygen, no light to even give birth to a child. Our neighbours have light, but a whole general hospital doesn’t have electricity.”

The healthcare workers expressed deep frustration and concern, describing how the lack of basic infrastructure undermines their ability to provide safe care. They called on government authorities to intervene immediately, repair the failing systems and ensure that the hospital is properly equipped to handle emergencies.

Nurses also pointed out the irony that a nearby residential house has electricity, while the hospital tasked with saving lives remains in the dark. Their message was clear: patients deserve better care, and healthcare workers need proper tools and facilities to do their jobs.

The video has sparked a strong reaction online, with many Nigerians expressing anger and disbelief that a public health facility would operate under such deplorable conditions. Some have called it an indictment of systemic neglect, while others are demanding urgent action from state and federal health authorities to address the issue before lives are lost.

As the debate continues on social media and among community leaders, many voices are urging that the conditions at Uwani General Hospital be treated not merely as an inconvenience, but as a serious public health emergency that requires swift and decisive government action.
