A young Nigerian man has sparked concern online after opening up about his involvement in a secret cult group, revealing that what started as curiosity has now turned into fear for his life.
The student, who identified himself only as “Obote,” shared his story anonymously on social media, explaining that he never expected things to spiral this far. According to him, he is now in hiding, constantly looking over his shoulder as he tries to distance himself from the group.
In his words:
“I joined cultism out of curiosity and I’m not feeling it. I have been hiding from my fellow cultists and they call me ‘Obote’. Everything about it is dangerous. I want out but I don’t know how. I don’t feel safe anymore. Please, is there anybody that has been a cultist and successfully got out? I need help before something bad happens.”
His emotional plea has triggered widespread reactions online, with many expressing concern and urging him to seek immediate help from trusted authorities. Others used the moment to warn young people about the dangers of getting involved in cult-related activities.
Growing Concerns
Cult-related violence continues to be a serious issue in parts of Nigeria, particularly within tertiary institutions. Reports of clashes between rival groups, often leading to injuries or loss of lives, have remained a recurring problem over the years.
Security experts have also noted that leaving such groups is rarely easy, as members may face threats, intimidation, or retaliation. Because of this, individuals in similar situations are strongly advised to seek help through safe and trusted channels, including security agencies, school authorities, and professional counsellors.
This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly curiosity can lead to dangerous consequences and why awareness and early intervention remain crucial.
