A Muslim trader, Sa’idu Murtala, has shared an emotional account of how a Christian resident saved his life during the recent attack in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos.

Speaking after the incident, Murtala said he was going about his normal business on Sunday evening when everything suddenly changed.

“I sell garden eggs in that area. That evening, around 7:30, I told my friend Hassan we should start going home, but he said we should wait a bit,” he said.

“Not long after, I started hearing gunshots.”

He described how panic broke out immediately, with people running in different directions, all trying to escape the violence.

“Everybody was looking for where to hide. I didn’t know where to go. I thought I was going to be killed,” he added.

According to him, help came when he least expected it.

“A Christian man quickly opened his house and brought me inside. He hid me and tried to calm me down because I was already losing my senses from fear,” Murtala said.

“He even kept me in his wife’s room and asked her to bring food for me. I spent the night in his house.”

Murtala said the man, who already knew him from the area, was fully aware that he was a Muslim but still chose to protect him.

“He knows me and my religion. I will never forget what he did for me,” he said.

He added that the next morning, the man contacted his family, and his father later came to take him home when the situation became safer.

However, Murtala revealed that his friend Hassan, who was with him before the attack, has not been seen since then.

Reflecting on the experience, he said it changed how he sees people and religion.

“In both Islam and Christianity, there are good and bad people. But if everyone was like the man who saved me, there would be peace,” he said.

“I have nothing to give him, but I believe God will reward him.”
