Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has opened up about her expectations for marriage, stressing that it should go beyond emotions and be built on growth, purpose, and accountability.

Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the award-winning artist explained that she believes marriage is more than just love—it is a lifelong commitment that requires maturity and personal development.

According to Tems, relationships are not always smooth, and couples must be prepared to navigate difficult moments together. For this reason, she emphasised the importance of choosing a partner with strong values.

“My partner has to be a God-fearing man,” she said, explaining that accountability plays a major role in sustaining love over time.

She questioned the idea of commitment without a higher sense of responsibility, noting that a person who is not accountable to anything may struggle to remain consistent in love and loyalty.

Tems also highlighted that marriage should inspire growth, describing it as a journey that helps individuals become better versions of themselves.

In her view, compatibility and personal evolution are just as important as love, especially when facing the realities and challenges that come with long-term commitment.
