Gunmen have killed a traditional ruler in Ebonyi State, in what has become the latest in a disturbing pattern of attacks targeting community leaders in the region.
The victim, Eze Josephat Ikegwu, who presided over Ishinkwo Community in Onicha Local Government Area, was reportedly attacked at his residence on the night of April 1.
According to accounts from within the community, the assailants struck around 10 p.m., opening fire through the window of his bedroom while he was indoors with his wife. The monarch was fatally wounded during the attack.
Authorities Confirm Incident
The Chairman of Onicha Local Government Area, Ikechukwu Ogbuofia, confirmed the killing, describing it as tragic and unsettling. He stated that the attackers gained access to the premises before carrying out the shooting.
The Ebonyi State Police Command also acknowledged the incident. Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu disclosed that an investigation is already underway, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible.
Renewed Security Concerns
The killing has heightened concerns over security in the state, coming just weeks after another traditional ruler was abducted and later killed under similar circumstances.
That earlier case involved a monarch who was reportedly kidnapped while on his way to church and found dead the following day. Police had since arrested a suspected mastermind and recovered weapons during subsequent operations.
With the latest incident, residents are increasingly worried about the safety of traditional leaders and the broader implications for community security.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that those behind the attacks will be brought to justice.
