A Nigerian woman has sparked conversations online after sharing a personal experience that left her questioning the nature of some modern friendships.

In a now-viral video, she opened up about what she described as a growing trend of “transactional friendships,” where simple hangouts begin to feel like financial obligations.

From casual outing to unexpected bills

According to her, she had invited a friend to join her for an outing, mainly to avoid going out alone. However, things quickly took an uncomfortable turn when the friend allegedly asked her to send money for transportation before they even met.

The request, she said, immediately raised concerns about expectations within the friendship.

The situation didn’t end there. Upon arriving at the venue, she claimed the friend ordered significantly more food—despite not being the one who initiated the outing.

“I felt like a sponsor, not a friend”

The experience left her feeling used, as she described the dynamic as one-sided and unfair. What was meant to be a simple outing, she said, began to feel like she was being treated more like a sponsor than a companion.

While she acknowledged that some people are comfortable splitting bills, she explained that she personally prefers to pay when she invites someone out. However, she expressed concern that such gestures are now being taken advantage of.

Choosing peace over pressure

Following the incident, she said she has had a change of mindset.

Rather than deal with expectations she finds uncomfortable, she now prefers going out alone choosing peace of mind over what she sees as financially draining friendships.

Her story has since resonated with many online, especially amid ongoing discussions about boundaries, money, and expectations in friendships.
