Nigerian skitmaker and satire king Kevin Chinedu, popularly known as Governor Amuneke, has revealed why he said no to what many would call a dream opportunity.
INEC wanted him as a youth ambassador. He turned it down. And his reason? He refuses to be silenced.
In a video shared on his X handle, Amuneke admitted that he was initially over the moon. He described the offer as a national honour and a major milestone, especially considering his background and how far he has come. “I have never felt as proud of myself as when I got that message,” he said. “It brought me tears of joy.” 😢🙌🏽
The role would involve working with notable figures and encouraging young Nigerians to register, vote, and participate in elections. A big deal. A big platform. But then he asked one simple question and everything changed. 🛑
“I asked a simple question. I said, ‘Am I going to still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed?'” Amuneke stated. 🗣️
The response? While he could still create content and promote civic awareness, direct criticism of INEC would not be allowed. In other words, enjoy the platform but don’t bite the hand that feeds you. 😬✋🏽
“The moment I heard that, what seemed like congratulations disappeared,” he said. “I wish it did not come with certain conditions to box my voice.” 📦🔇
For Governor Amuneke, that was a deal breaker. You cannot pay him to be quiet. His platform is built on political satire and holding institutions accountable. He explained that his passion is rooted in real-life experiences — the tears of millions of Nigerians, the messages he gets from people struggling with bad governance, and his own background. “The pressure is worse when I am doing nothing,” he noted. “Those voices keep resounding, and that is what drives me.” 😤❤️
He also had a powerful message for fellow creators. “If you have a platform today and you do not compromise, always remember there are millions of people whose hope is on that voice. That voice is not just yours.” 🎙️🙌🏽
While declining the offer, Amuneke expressed gratitude to whoever recommended him. He made it clear that he is open to working with brands and institutions but never under conditions that restrict his content or silence his truth. 🚫🤐
