Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has stirred conversation online after declaring that it is almost impossible for an individual to spend one billion dollars within a lifetime no matter how extravagant their lifestyle.
Speaking during a recent discussion on wealth and consumer culture, Seun argued that the human brain was never designed to fully grasp the scale of billion-dollar fortunes.
“You cannot finish one billion dollars in this lifetime. I go to buy something and they say this one is worth 13 billion naira, 12 billion naira.”
He broke it down simply. “One million seconds is 11 days. One billion seconds is 11,000 days — which is 37 years.”
His point? If you have one billion dollars, even if you buy private jets and everything you want, the money will not finish.
The comments have triggered fresh debates on social media about wealth concentration, luxury spending, and economic inequality, especially in Nigeria where millions continue to struggle with inflation and rising living costs.
One person wrote: “He is right. The rich keep getting richer because they can’t even spend their money fast enough.”
Another said: “Tell that to people who can’t afford one meal a day. The gap is too wide.”
Someone else added: “This is why capitalism is broken. Too much wealth in too few hands.”
Seun Kuti has previously criticized capitalism and excessive wealth accumulation. In 2024, he questioned why a small percentage of the world’s population controls a large share of global resources while poverty continues to rise across Africa.
