A man has sparked widespread debate on social media after warning that regular bread consumption could pose serious health risks to both men and women.

The comments, which gained attention in online wellness discussions on Monday, claimed that modern wheat has undergone significant changes over the years, allegedly reducing its nutritional value.

According to him, wheat processing and modifications introduced since the 1960s have removed key nutrients while introducing components he described as potentially harmful to human health.

His claims triggered mixed reactions online. While some users agreed that excessive consumption of processed foods may contribute to rising cases of obesity and diabetes, others argued that bread remains an affordable and essential source of nutrition for many households.

In his words, he said:

“I went back to the history of what happened to wheat from the 1960s when wheat was genetically modified. They removed everything that made wheat healthy and included things that made it dangerous for human consumption.”

He further advised people to reconsider their diet choices, adding:

“This is the time to stop eating bread if you want to live long.”

Health experts, however, continue to emphasise balance rather than total avoidance of staple foods. Nutritionists note that whole wheat bread, when consumed in moderation alongside fruits and vegetables, can still form part of a healthy diet.

Concerns around processed foods are not new. In recent years, health campaigns across Nigeria have encouraged citizens to reduce sugar and ultra-processed food intake amid rising cases of non-communicable diseases.

The post has continued to generate debate across social media platforms.
