A Nigerian woman has sparked intense reactions online after sharing a troubling family situation involving her mother and her husband’s younger brother during what was supposed to be a peaceful postpartum period.
According to the woman, she had recently welcomed a baby and invited her mother to stay with her for omugwo — the traditional postpartum care commonly practised in many Nigerian homes, where mothers or older female relatives help care for both mother and child after childbirth.
However, what began as a period of support reportedly took an unexpected turn that left her emotionally overwhelmed and confused.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), she alleged that she and her husband discovered his 32-year-old younger brother in an intimate situation with her 57-year-old mother, who had been staying with them for about three weeks.
Explaining the situation, she revealed that her father passed away over six years ago and that her mother had travelled from her own home to assist her after childbirth.
“I gave birth last month and my mother came to stay with me for omugwo… We caught my husband’s younger brother, who is 32 years old, sleeping with my mother, who is 57 years old,” she wrote.
The woman admitted that the incident left her feeling embarrassed, disappointed, and uncertain about how her husband might now view her family. She added that her husband’s brother defended the relationship by insisting that both he and her mother were consenting adults free to make their own decisions.
Overcome with anger, she said she asked her mother to begin packing her belongings because she no longer felt comfortable having her stay in the house.
She also expressed confusion over whether to inform her siblings about the situation, saying she feels emotionally torn and unsure of the best way to handle the matter.
The post has since generated widespread reactions online, with social media users offering mixed opinions. While some sympathised with her emotional distress, others argued that the two individuals involved are adults capable of making personal choices.
The situation continues to spark debate online, particularly around family boundaries, cultural expectations, and how sensitive personal matters should be handled within families.
