A tragic road accident on the Yola–Song route in Adamawa State has claimed the lives of six people, including four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and a Nigerian Army officer.
The crash occurred on Wednesday near Barikin-Sajo when a military weapons truck collided head-on with a commercial Hummer bus travelling from Kano to Mubi. The impact triggered a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles, trapping passengers inside and leaving little chance of escape.
Eyewitnesses said the military truck reportedly veered into the path of the oncoming bus while attempting to overtake another vehicle on a sharp bend, leading to the fatal collision and subsequent inferno.
While some witnesses suggested the death toll could be higher, officials confirmed six fatalities.
The spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said all passengers in the commercial bus were burnt beyond recognition. He confirmed that among the dead were four NYSC members serving in Adamawa State, one civilian passenger, and a military officer who died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other emergency agencies were deployed to the scene for rescue operations and to clear the wreckage.
The incident has renewed concerns over dangerous overtaking, speeding, and poor adherence to traffic regulations on Nigerian highways, with safety experts urging stricter enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
