The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the commencement of applications for the 2026 cohort of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Program (OFP), inviting qualified Nigerian students seeking higher education opportunities in the United States to apply.
According to a notice issued by the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2025.
The Opportunity Fund Program is coordinated by EducationUSA Nigeria, a network operating under the public diplomacy section of the US Mission, and is designed to support academically outstanding Nigerian students with strong leadership potential in pursuing studies at accredited institutions in the United States.

Supporting Talented Nigerian Students
The program aims to expand access to US higher education by assisting talented students who may face financial barriers during the application process.
According to the US Mission, the initiative also promotes educational exchange while advancing shared economic and developmental interests between Nigeria and the United States.
The Mission noted that the 2026 cohort aligns with the Freedom 250 anniversary celebration, marking 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values.
“Freedom 250 marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values, and the OFP 2026 cohort will advance these priorities by preparing globally competitive talents aligned with U.S. economic and strategic interests,” the statement said.

One of the key advantages of the Opportunity Fund Program is that it helps successful applicants cover essential upfront costs associated with applying to US universities.
These expenses include standardized testing fees, university application fees, and other related charges that often pose challenges for prospective international students.
The US Mission explained that the initiative is also intended to encourage secure, lawful, and well-managed participation of international students within the American higher education system.
