Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has acknowledged that the absence of Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika contributed to Club Brugge’s 4-1 defeat in their UEFA Champions League clash.
Atlético secured a 7-4 aggregate victory in the Round of 16 after a 3-3 draw in Belgium, with the Metropolitano witnessing a dominant second-leg performance. While Club Brugge remained competitive for long periods, they eventually faltered against Atlético’s precision and attacking efficiency.
Onyedika missed the return leg due to suspension from accumulated yellow cards. The Nigerian had been pivotal in the first leg, scoring a goal and providing an assist, helping Brugge match Atlético’s high-intensity play. His physical presence and ball-winning ability were central to Brugge’s midfield, and head coach Ivan Leko had to reshuffle his lineup to compensate for his absence.

Simeone commented on the impact of the missing midfielder:
“I like the team [Club Brugge]; they’re young, with very good midfielders. Onyedika was missing.”
Despite Brugge’s organisation and spells of possession, Atlético capitalised on key moments, particularly in the second half. Their clinical finishing proved decisive, highlighting the narrow margins at this level.
Club Brugge exit the Champions League with credit for their performance across both legs, but ultimately they could not contain Atlético’s attacking firepower over 180 minutes.
