Nigerian cleric Philip Olubakin has sparked online discussion after sharing his views on marriage, financial independence, and household responsibilities.
In a message that has gone viral on social media, the pastor revealed that he has not personally washed his clothes for over a decade, explaining that he has relied on laundry services since his time in law school. He emphasised that domestic duties should not limit a woman’s intellectual potential or professional growth.
Pastor speaks on household roles
Discussing his lifestyle, Olubakin said he deliberately avoids placing traditional domestic expectations on his wife.
“I can’t remember the last time I washed my clothes. By the time I entered law school, I was already giving my clothes out for laundry. All through my service year and for the past 12 years, I haven’t washed my clothes myself,” he explained. He also noted that his wife has never washed his clothes, highlighting his preference for outsourcing such tasks.
‘I want a financially independent wife’
The cleric stressed the importance of financial independence in marriage, especially for women.
Recalling a moment when he needed money urgently, he said he asked his wife to lend him ₦1 million to give as a seed to a respected man of God in the hospital.
“I want to have a wife that can lend me one million. That’s a kingdom marriage,” he stated.
Message to women in relationships
Olubakin also encouraged women to build financial stability for themselves, warning that complete dependence on a partner can make relationships challenging. According to him, women who rely entirely on their partners for basic needs may struggle to make independent decisions within relationships.
His remarks have generated mixed reactions online, with some praising his emphasis on financial independence while others questioned aspects of his comments.
