Veteran Nigerian filmmaker Wale Adenuga has responded to the controversy surrounding claims made by actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known for his role as Papa Ajasco.
Ayoyinka had recently sparked reactions after revealing that he was facing financial difficulties despite decades in the entertainment industry. He also mentioned that he needs permission to use the Papa Ajasco character.
Adenuga dismisses claims
In a detailed statement, the founder of Wale Adenuga Productions described the allegations as misleading and clarified that there has been no major conflict between him and the actor.
He praised Ayoyinka for his outstanding portrayal of Papa Ajasco, noting that he closely resembles the original cartoon character he created in 1976.
On brand usage and permissions
Adenuga explained that while Ayoyinka is free to pursue other acting opportunities, he must seek approval before using the Papa Ajasco brand for personal projects, as it is a copyrighted property that must be protected.
He added that this policy applies to all actors associated with the production and is necessary to maintain the integrity of the brand.
Addressing financial concerns
Reacting to claims of financial hardship, Adenuga questioned what happened to Ayoyinka’s earnings from his over 30-year career as a civil servant with the Lagos State Government, as well as his income from acting.
He also noted that the actor had benefited from several opportunities over the years, including access to multiple vehicles and ownership of a house in Ogun State.
Other actors not restricted
Adenuga emphasized that other cast members—such as Pa James, Mama Ajasco, Boy Alinco, Miss Pepeiye, Akpan, and Oduma—continue to work on various projects outside the show under their personal names.
He further explained that production for Papa Ajasco and Company typically runs for only about six weeks each year, giving actors ample time to engage in other ventures.
Reaffirming reputation
The statement also highlighted that the long-running comedy series continues to air on multiple platforms, including television networks and YouTube.
Adenuga reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fair treatment, stating that all artistes are paid according to industry standards and that any claims of neglect or exploitation are false.
He concluded by thanking the public for their concern and continued support, stressing that the organisation remains committed to maintaining its long-standing reputation in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
